  SEPT 19 MISSOURI VALLEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LB Zeke Vandenburgh, Illinois State, 6-3, 235, Sr., Freeport, Ill. (Freeport HS),...Linebacker Zeke Vandenburgh once again disrupted the game for the Redbird defense, which was dominant in a 35-7 win over rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday night. Vandenburgh's final line was extremely balanced, as he led the team with eight tackles, added a sack, three TFLs, recovered a fumble, had a pass breakup that led to an interception for a touchdown and was credited with two quarterback hurries. In total, the Redbird defense forced five turnovers on the night (3 INT, 2 FR), recorded four sacks and had 11 TFLs. - Missouri Valley Football

  SEPT 12 MISSOURI VALLEY SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: KR Jalen Carr, Illinois State, 5-9, 175, So., Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep High,...Sophomore Jalen Carr stepped up when the Redbirds needed him the most and helped the Redbirds to a 28-21 victory over Valparaiso Saturday night. After the Beacons took a 14-7 after recovering a muffed punt in the endzone early in the second quarter, Carr took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to the house for a touchdown to knot the game at 14-14 just seconds later. Carr's kickoff return for a touchdown was the first for the Redbirds since 2017, when Christian Uphoff returned one 100 yards for a score at South Dakota State. - Missouri Valley Football

  SEPT 19 MISSOURI VALLEY NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: QB Zack Annexstad, Illinois State, 6-3, 220, Jr., Norseland, Minn. (IMG Academy/Minnesota),...Transfer quarterback Zack Annexstad led the Redbirds to a dominant 35-7 win over Eastern Illinois in the annual Mid-America Classic at Hancock Stadium. For the second week in a row, Annexstad accounted for three touchdowns for the Redbirds as he threw a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for another in the victory over the Panthers. Annexstad had touchdown throws of 17 and 30 yards and called his own number on a 2-yard TD run for the final score of the game. He finished the game 19-for-33 with 212 yards passing for ISU. - Missouri Valley Football

  Zack Annexstad passed for 257 yards and a touchdown, Ian Wagner kicked three field goals and Illinois State beat Northern Iowa 23-21 Saturday. Annexstad's 3-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Deming capped a 13-play, 79-yard drive and gave the Red Birds a 7-0 lead with 8:39 left in the first quarter. Sergio Morancy answered with a 53-yard touchdown catch-and-run less than 3 minutes later but Wagner's first field goal, a 33-yarder with 2:18 left in the first quarter, gave Illinois State the lead for good. Wenkers Wright scored on a 3-yard run to finish a 13-play, 68-yard drive that took nearly-7 minutes off the clock and made it 17-7 midway through the second quarter and Wagner made a 25-yard field goal to make it 20-14 as time in the first half expired. Illinois State (3-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley Conference) took more than 5 minutes off the clock before settling for a 41-yarder by Wagner that made it a 9-point game after the first possession of the second half. Sam Schnee scored on a 6-yard run for Northern Iowa (2-4, 2-2) to cap a 14-play, 92-yard drive and trim the deficit to 23-21 with 12:50 left in the game. - AP College Football

  Zack Annexstad threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Illinois State's defense came up with two interception-return scores as the Redbirds stymied Eastern Illinois 35-7 on Saturday. Illinois State (2-1) has won back-to-back contests following a season-opening defeat at Wisconsin. Jeff Bowens intercepted the Panthers' Jonah O'Brien and returned it 40 yards for a score to make it 21-7 with 1:09 left before halftime. Deandre Lamont later picked O'Brien and ran it in from 3 yards out at the beginning of the third quarter. O'Brien threw an 11-yard touchdown to DeWayne Cooks Jr. to knot the score at 7 with 3:09 left in the first. Illinois State held the Panthers (0-3) to 167 yards of offense. - AP College Football

The Freeport, Ill., native led the team with 12 tackles, recorded a career-best three sacks, tied a career-high with 3.0 TFLs and added a forced fumble in the win for the Redbirds. Vandenburgh has now recorded double-digit tackle efforts in the first two games of the season for ISU. His final sack of the game was one of the biggest defensive plays of the contest, as he took down Valparaiso's Mason Kaplan for the third time with just 23 seconds left on the clock and that led to the game-sealing interception on the next play by Franky West. - Missouri Valley Football

Bohlken,...Bohlken ranked No. 10 in the FCS and was second in the MVFC with a 44.1 yards (ISU single-season record) per punt average on 67 attempts, with a long punt of 64 yards on the season. The Jefferson City, Missouri, native recorded 23 punts of over 50 yards and placed 20 inside the opponent's 20-yard line with only four touchbacks on the season.
